“Hi, do you do wedding videos?” is one of the first questions I’m asked by enquiring customers over the phone.  For a moment or two they are always lost for words when I answer “No!”

And we don’t.

Wedding video in Ireland and around the world is all too often a predictable documentation of a couples day… We have all seen a wedding video at some stage or another and although technology has made things far easier for today’s producers, the content has more or less remained the same over the past twenty years.

What we do for our couples here at Velvetine Studios is completely different. First of all, and despite being at the forefront in terms of what technology we are using, we don’t worry about how many pixels our cameras have or what software we are editing on. We travelled up from Kerry to Limerick to film this wedding for Paddy and Aine. And what a day!

Like all our couples, Paddy and Aine didn’t want an ordinary wedding video; they are a fun, happy go lucky couple and they wanted something that reflected this… So we gave them their own Wedding Story.

When we arrived at their church it was literally freezing inside (it was the middle of  a verrry cold Dec) but as soon as Paddy and his guests arrived I could feel the place warming up.  There was an obvious sense of connection and community and I was so happy to be a part of it all.  And what I loved about this down-to-earth couple and their family and friends was that even though they knew how to have lots of fun there was also a wonderful sense of meaning and sincerity to the marriage ceremony.

The wedding reception took place at Woodlands House Hotel in Adare and I was in bits for the speeches.  They went on for about 40 minutes but it was one of those rare occasions when they could have carried on for another 40 and I don’t think anyone would have complained: they were hilarious.  Apparently, the best man, Roger, is still a local celebrity after his performance

Other key vendors who contributed to a fantastic day and were a joy to work with were Geraldine Foley (florist), the wedding photographer Rose Baker, church music by The Secret Chord, and the reception music was by the ever popular Limerick based wedding band The Deerhunters.

It didn’t just rain on Orla & Maurice’s wedding day… we actually had a storm!  But that didn’t stop everyone from having a brilliant day.  In fact, not even sister-in-laws being carted off to hospital in the wedding car with labour pains could put a dampener on this day…

It really was a perfect day!!!

I warmed to Orla from the very first moment we spoke on the phone and her bubbly outlook on life is so infectious.  And Maurice, her lucky groom, is an absolute gentleman and mighty craic as well. They are a perfect match.

The couple were married at Fossa Church, Killarney and their reception was held at The Malton – I love this hotel so much that I’m getting married there myself!!! Emer and all the staff made sure that everything from the service to the food was absolutely first class; simply a great hotel!

Breda Daly was the photographer and I have to say that it was a pleasure to work alongside her for the day.  She is a charming lady and she’s so laid back that couples can’t help but feel at ease around her… a very important consideration when it comes to choosing a photographer/supplier who is going to be around you for large parts of your wedding day!

It poured out of the heavens that October day, a woman almost gave birth in the bride & groom’s wedding car doing 90 to the nearest hospital, and truth be told I was suffering from a minor dose of flu…. But when the first dance was finished and I said my goodbyes to these lovely people, I took a moment to reflect on what a fabulous day I was privileged to share in… and what an amazing job I have!

My good friend Roger Overall took this picture of me while I was telling him about my crusade to change the face of wedding video in Ireland.

Six months or so further down the road it looks like I’m finally making an impact with my wedding films for modern young couples.  Not only have I been lucky enough to film weddings throughout Ireland but I’ve also told Wedding Stories in the UK, Crete, and I’ve even filmed in the USA.

Now, it seems that Velvetine Studios has a huge fan base in Sweden!

To be honest, this TV campaign about our unique approach to wedding video has come as a huge surprise to us but the great thing about this international exposure is that people are finally waking up to the fact that there is a new breed of wedding film available to today’s young couples.
