We Don’t Use Lights… Ever!!!

Our couples and wedding guests love the fact that we don’t intrude upon or orchestrate a wedding day in any way whatsoever.  And part of this service is our strict policy against using any additional lighting for the benefit of our films. It is very true to say that plenty of light will produce gorgeous, clean images but most people tell us that the videographer’s lights bouncing off the ceiling or tracing around the dancefloor like a searchlight on top of a camera are a major source of annoyance for camera shy people.

Velvetine Studios have always listened to feedback from our clients which is why we have never used anything but the ambient lighting available at any given event.  In fact, we spend hours grading your wedding film to make it look as good as possible.  Have a look at the images below: the ones on the left are straight out of the camera in a very dark hall (only a few years ago it would have been impossible to get images like this but today’s cameras can literally see in the dark) and the images on the right are treated to hours of grading and colouring.

I had been so excited about this wedding for such a long time and it had finally come. New Year’s Eve. Tralee. And it was freezing. But like Fr Padraig Walsh said “As soon as Amy came in to the church she warmed us all up…”

I first met Amy over two years ago and I was at a crossroads with wedding video. Doubts about whether couples wanted to join me on my journey to change Irish wedding video were beginning to creep into my thinking and I was being tempted away with offers of corporate video work. However, I decided to remain true to my passion and committed myself 100% to a new and pioneering style of wedding film. Amy was my first potential client after making this decision.

But that is not why her wedding was a source of excitement for me. During our consultation she came across as a very friendly young woman who knew exactly what she wanted from her wedding. She choose some great vendors and service suppliers because she wanted her day to be “different”. So, all the signs were good and Amy decided to book us… and then we got chatting some more. Amy began to share some of her amazing story with me and I learned about a tragic couple of deaths in her family which changed her life and those around her forever. Her story inspired me – it’s as simple as that.

When Amy saw her movie poster for the first time she joked that she “feels like a celebrity“. You may not be a celebrity, Amy, but one things for sure, your family and me included think that you are a Star!

We first met Bernie Lucid almost five years ago when she was a bridesmaid at one of our first Irish weddings after I had returned from living in London. And I was so thankful when Bernie – several years later – insisted that we film her wedding in Ballyheigue. A lot has changed since 2005 but happy memories came flooding back because I have a special affinity with Ballyheigue and its people so the pleasure of being part of Bernie and Finbarr’s big day was definitely all ours. It really was a fantastic wedding: snow capped mountains, a meaningful ceremony from my friend Fr. Tom Leane, gorgeous beach front footage, and I also had the pleasure of working alongside photographer Ian Cronin and his assistant Trevor. I could work with these guys every day of the week because of their fun, relaxed attitudes: two great guys!

The reception was held at Ballyroe Heights Hotel and it was great to meet up with Mark and all his staff who can never do enough for their brides and grooms. Bernie sat us down for a bite to eat and I must say that the food was gorgeous!!!

To cap off a fantastic night, Celebrations The Band rocked the night away and as ever, these guys had me in stitches!

So, to Bernie & Finbarr, thanks a million for having us and you’ll be glad to know that your Wedding Story rocks!
