Kidnap The Bride

I think it’s fair to say that Mark planned his wedding day with Eloriana to military precision… Every last second was accounted for, no detail was overlooked and yet, like every other wedding day, somethings didn’t quite go to plan.  However, that’s the beauty of a wedding day.  It is often a dream come true that takes on a life of its own through the people who celebrate the event; in other words, the people who misplace the cuff links… or who delay the hair or make-up… or whatever the case may be that makes us all human.

Mark first rang me from Romania back in 2010.

We spoke at length and once business was out of the way we talked about the ongoing recession, his new life abroad, and of course, Eloriana… better known as Ellie.  Weeks later I met his parents, Frank and Francis, in a Tralee hotel to iron out some of the finer details and we had a great old chat about Mark and Ellie and the ever building excitement surrounding their wedding.

When the day finally arrived we made our way to Dromoland Castle to meet the couple as they got prepared that morning.

Ellie’s hair appointment in Ennis was running behind and she was delayed in getting back to the castle for her beauty treatments at the spa.  It’s no wonder she was a bag of nerves when we met her but, in our line of work, it’s something we are quite used to.  In fact, we believe that most brides do not reveal their true selves until the ceremony is over.  Ellie later kindly commented that Elaine set her at ease the minute we arrived and true to form, the bride began to reveal her true self as the day unfolded.

Mark was exactly as I expected.  Calm. In control. Mobile phone stuck to his ear.  Always two and three steps ahead of everybody else.  The only thing his groomsmen had to worry about after the clay pigeon shooting and go-kart racing was “Who’s got some deodorant?”  Of course, Mark came to the rescue and his brother Shane showed everyone how not to apply it.

It really is a man’s world!

My favourite part of the day was the ceremony and Fr. Larkin’s homily was inspired by the Celtic Cross that took Mark’s mother over 100 hours to hand stitch onto the priest’s vestment.  The colours of Romania and Ireland were intertwined into the cross; it was a lovely touch.  Fr. Pat highlighted the symbolism of the cross and its colours and he stitched a story of eternity and the importance of love around it.  It was heartfelt, meaningful, and much appreciated by the bride and groom.

This wedding had everything: drama during the morning preparations, lots of thoughtful presents, two traditions meeting at the stunning Dromoland Castle, singing waiters, fireworks, and the bride was kidnapped.  Which leads me to another favourite moment.  Meeting the real Ellie for the first time.  Let me explain…

It is a Romanian tradition to kidnap the bride from the wedding, take her to another location, and demand a ransom from the groom.  Not only was this fun for me to film but I also got to speak with Ellie; no more nerves and any tension had long since evaporated at the cathedral.  Her true self had appeared and her warm, friendly and caring personality won over all the bemused locals at a pub in Newmarket-on-Fergus.  To say they were all shocked to see a stunning bride breeze into the bar at 11pm is an understatement but it was a pleasure to watch Ellie make friends with the locals; especially an old lady who was in her nineties.

Mark and Ellie: Thank you for your hospitality {our meal was delicious!} and thank you so much for having us as part of your day!!!

Other key vendors and suppliers:

BluebellEllie and Mark identified the wedding stationary company as one of their star suppliers.  In Ellie’s own words “Tara was absolutely awesome in every respect”.  High praise, indeed, and we always highlight five star service here on the blog so well done Tara and Bluebell.

The Woodards – Keith and Evelyn were looking after the wedding photography and it was great to work alongside them, as always.  I don’t think I laughed as much at a wedding in 2011 as I did at this one :) :) :)

Dromoland Castle – Margaret, Nico, and the staff are legends in the wedding industry and they can never do enough for us.  We get to film a lot of weddings at the castle and Elaine and I get to experience the wonderful service at each of them and one happy face we would like to bring to your attention is that of Roisin.  You can see her serving nibbles during the teaser and she is a regular at all the wedding events. She is so friendly, great with the guests, and  it’s smiling faces like hers that makes a couples day special.  Well done, Roisin!

The summer of 2010.  It was early evening and I had set aside half an hour to chat with Sinead and Michael, learn a little about them and give them the opportunity to decide if Velvetine Studios were a good fit for their wedding day.  They wanted more than just wedding video so we were off to a great start. I can’t remember why Elaine wasn’t there but I met the couple on my own.

The connection was immediate.

We spent more like an hour and a half, just talking.  During the conversation, Sinead told me she is a nurse and the truth is, I could have guessed.  I told her that she reminds me of the wonderful men and women who looked after my Dad during his terminal illness.  It was almost twenty years ago but I will never forget the kindness they afforded him, the care, the dignity, and their strength to show only positive emotions.

To my surprise, I noticed that both Sinead and Michael had tears welled in their eyes.  I was for all intensive purposes a complete stranger telling them, in a matter of fact way, why I have the greatest respect in the world for nurses and their reaction summed up their characters in that single moment. Later that night when filling Elaine in on the meeting, I told how her how excited I was about this couple and their wedding.  Every fibre in my body told me that this was going to be one of them really, really special days.

An entire year passed by before I would see them again.

The wedding day arrived and Elaine and I began filming at the family home.  Tucked away, just past Beaufort and off the main road, Sinead’s parents house is set against the backdrop of the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range. What’s most impressive about the Buckley home is… it is a real home.  It’s the atmosphere that greets you the moment you walk through the front door.  It’s a sense of belonging, even for strangers, and Elaine remarked on more than one occasion “I could live here”.  In fact, the welcome was so sincere and the connection so strong that Elaine was already in tears and we hadn’t even reached the ceremony yet.  We both fell love with the families and Elaine was an emotional mess for the rest of day… much to my amusement.  She cried buckets during the ceremony and speeches and she kept blubbering “Their Wedding Story is going to be amazing….”

Over the course of the day, and like all good stories, Sinead and Michael’s story began to peel itself away in layers and I wanted to reflect this in their teaser.  I think great a story is one can you can revisit and discover something new during the second and third journeys through it and I would like to think we achieved this with “My Forever”.  The title was inspired by a poem which was written by the bride and read to a captivated audience at Fossa church in Killarney.   Again, it was one of many layers that peeled itself away to give us an insight into the lives of the Buckley and McCarthy families and add Father Pat O’Donnell into the mix and you have an amazing Wedding Story.

Fr. Pat is first and foremost, a gentleman. Funny. Down to earth. Sincere.  I have filmed several of his homilies over the past four years and each one of them is unique to the couple before him.  They have a poetic quality.  Almost nostalgic.  He is a born storyteller and he wraps up his messages of hope and guidance into funny but meaningful fables and Elaine and I have the greatest of respect for him.

This day was amazing.  Everything clicked into the place.  Stunning locations and venues.  Great service providers all round.  A thoughtful celebrant. Heartfelt speeches.  Glorious weather.  In fact, it was as near to perfect as you could ever get and I can think of no better way to sign off on 2011 than with a teaser like this.

Sinead and Michael: Thank you for your warmth and hospitality {the food at The Europe was to die for!} and thank you so much for having Elaine and I as part of your wedding day!!

Other key vendors and suppliers:

Ian Cronin - Ian and Trevor were looking after the wedding photography and it is always a pleasure to work alongside the pair of them.  Great guys and their sense of fun is infectious and a great addition to any wedding day!!!!

The EuropeA beautiful venue and Elaine was in heaven among the decor.  In a past life, and before she fell in love with the wedding industry {and me, of course}, Elaine was a talented interior designer and she spent our dinner break walking around the hotel stroking the fabrics and taking pictures on her phone.  Speaking of dinner, the food and service at The Europe was second to none and once again, thanks to Sinead and Michael for their kind hospitality.

High fashion, designer sunglasses, bling bling, fake tan… I had just met Cara and Ray’s priest. Moments later I began to meet the wedding guests and they all struck me as a bunch of bright, happy and wonderful people; it’s little wonder that I heard nicknames like “Smiler” floating around. This was going to be a great day and I already had a fair idea what type of tone and mood would drive forward their wedding story edit.

I don’t think I stopped laughing all day. Even during the ceremony… even during the vows… Cara, Ray, and all their guests found the time to laugh and enjoy every moment. Sometimes nerves, months of intense planning, and the enormity of the occasion can wrap a blanket of anxiety around many bride and grooms. Not so with Cara and Ray. They were just happy to have everyone they loved and cared about in The Lough Church to share in their big day and it made for a beautiful ceremony.

The reception was held at The Maryborough Hotel and Cara had infused her own bling signature into an already impressive venue. She admits herself that she hero worships Wedding by Franc and her proud groom remarked during his speech that she would give Franc a good run for his money. Her guests were impressed by the drinks reception, finger food and entertainment but Elaine and I were so happy for Cara as we watched everyone gasping as they entered the banquet hall.

Despite our protests, the bride and groom insisted that we join them and their guests for dinner in the main hall. We tried to explain that there was no need to go to all that bother for us – we are more than happy to sit in the bar – but Cara and Ray were having none of it. It summed up the type of people they are. Kind, thoughtful, and always caring about other people.

Elaine and I left Maryborough House with a warm and fuzzy feeling that night. We had met some terrific, decent people, rose above one or two filming challenges that came our way, and we were reminded to never take ourselves too seriously. Life’s too short for that.

Cara and Ray: Thank you so much for having Velvetine Studios as part of your wedding day!

You and Me Always

Our 2011 calendar was already full and Elaine and I both agreed not to take on a single extra booking this year.

Then, less than one month before their big day, Polly and JD called us from Singapore and we just could not say no.  We all seemed like a perfect fit for each other.  They came across as a friendly couple who had put a lot of time and effort into their Dromoland Castle wedding and they wanted it captured in a way that reflected their hopes, dreams and excitement; in other words, wedding video alone just wasn’t going to cut it for them. They loved our stories and Elaine and I needed all of two seconds to chalk up that extra date onto the calendar.

This wedding had so much going on that on a couple of occasions I found myself struggling to choose which shot to focus on.  For starters, the stunning bride was made for cameras, there were thirteen stunning bridesmaids and an equal amount of dashing ushers to keep an eye upon, there were guests and fashion from all over the world and I have never seen as many page boys and flower girls in one wedding party… or as well behaved for that matter.  Throw England rugby captain, Lewis Moody, Dromloand Castle, and breathtaking locations into the mix and you have one very busy day.

I loved it!

The day got off to a very calm start; it was as if every one was getting ready to go for Sunday lunch, not a single nerve to be found.  After filming some of the preparations at the castle, we met the celebrant, Very Reverend Seamus Kelly P.P, and I wish I could stand him in front of every technology shy priest in Ireland so that he could explain the benefits of embracing the new digital world.  Fr. Kelly is a huge Apple fan and when we finished talking all things Mac he was asking me about the pixels on my cameras and comparing my discreet microphone systems to the ones he regularly uses.  What a guy!

The ceremony was beautiful!

Elaine and I were both hopping with excitement at some of the amazing moments we captured and at this point I must also mention the wedding photographer, Cormac Byrne, who afforded us so much space to work in.  He is always conscious of everyone else around him which makes our job soooo much easier on the day and when it comes to editing.  Thank you, Cormac!

Dromoland Castle in Clare was the ideal venue for this wedding party.  The drinks reception was held in the picturesque Walled Garden and on several occasions I heard the many foreign visitors gasp at the beauty of the surroundings.  And of course, Nico, Margaret, and all the staff made sure that everyone experienced the magic and five star treatment that this unbeatable wedding venue has to offer.

Polly and JD: Thank you so much for choosing Velvetine Studios to be a part of your wedding day. It was a pleasure!

This Feels Like Home

This wedding was memorable for several reasons and the day’s events had a huge impact on me. My belief that wedding footage is priceless was confirmed by an incident which I will highlight in a separate blog post but this was first and foremost, Aisling and Alan’s big day.

Although we only knew the couple through an exchange of emails and phone calls, their excitement was infectious from the word go! We learned that we had filmed Aisling’s cousin’s wedding – a very memorable and intimate Christmas wedding – just last year. They were wonderful people who we remain very fond of to this day so we were thrilled to be part of Aisling and Alan’s day which promised to reacquaint us with some familiar faces. What we were not expecting was to meet so many familiar faces from other weddings we filmed.

First and biggest surprise of the day was meeting Dave McElland – a wedding photographer who we love! – was attending as a guest. I have some rather cute footage of David entering the church grounds with a pretty, white umbrella. I could post it if I receive enough requests to do so. I’m sure David won’t mind.

Aisling arrived to the church, beaming and sipping from a glass of champagne. The torrential July rain didn’t bother her one bit in the slightest and she was everything I imagined her to be and more. I don’t think she even knows what nerves mean. Alan, on the other hand, was pacing about the church, clenching his fists and sucking in huge gulps of air. Elaine’s heart went out to him but like most grooms, all nerves vanished the second his bride came gliding up the aisle. Fr. Jim Kennelly was the celebrant and he could not do enough for us. The majority of priests that we work with are like Fr. Jim; friendly, obliging and down to earth. It’s always a pleasure to meet and work with such people and they never fail to deliver meaningful and memorable ceremonies.

Onto the hotel, and even though we were frantic busy trying to capture all the atmosphere, we did manage to speak with several people who were familiar with our passion for “Wedding Story” as opposed to wedding video. We even managed to meet two couples who had tried to book us but we were unavailable for their dates. What a pity but it was great to receive such positive feedback. It’s fantastic and reassuring to hear firsthand that young couples appreciate the amount of care and effort that we put into each wedding celebration. An even bigger positive was that they loved the fact that we don’t do “wedding video”.

As the day continued to unfold, there was a strong theme of “home” to this wedding and the speeches at Inchadoney had the place in happy tears. I think I even spotted a pool of water in the corner of David McElland’s eye but he assured me it was down to tiredness from the long journey that morning. I gave him the benefit of the doubt so I filmed his partner having a cry instead {she’s the beautiful girl you see tripping over her tears during the father of the bride speech}.

The rain poured down all day and night but it mattered not. Aisling and Alan are a happy go lucky couple and their wedding day was a joy to be a part of. I will always remember the friendly, warm and party atmosphere that made this day so special.

Aislang and Alan: Thank you so, so much for your kind hospitality and for the privilege of capturing your wedding story!

She’s In My Heart

I could tell you a hundred and one things about Lisa and Pierce’s big day and I could have taken almost as many twists and turns with their Wedding Story. In fact, as the wedding day unfolded and even during the edit process, I had a completely different vision for their teaser. It was going to be fast moving and driven by humour; my face was actually sore from smiling that day.

Elaine and I arrived to Lisa’s beautiful home in Camp, Kerry to film her morning preparations. The bride was sitting with rollers in her hair, no make-up, and she looked great; she even joked that I should be careful not to fall in love with her. The bridal house was the usual hive of activity; bridesmaids were having their hair pinned, faces touched up, all the women fussed around the bride, admired her flowers, made last minute phone calls with instructions to the groomsmen, the dog sniffed around the hair trolley for a nice brush to play with and the men of the house disappeared out of harms way to look for their socks and ribbon up the car. Fuelled by Lisa’s upbeat manner, confidence and good humour, the house was buzzing with laughter.

Elaine and I finished filming at the house and we stumbled upon Lisa having a quiet, thoughtful moment to herself. In two seconds, I think I glimpsed another side to Lisa. A part of her that only those she holds close and dear get to see. It was a powerful moment and it helped prepare me for what moments to really look out for the rest of the day,

Lisa is a big personality… and so is her husband, Pierce. Their larger than life personalities were an obvious path to follow for their teaser… But, instead, I purposefully choose to show very little of them. I didn’t show you their young boy, Neil.  I didn’t even show you the most important and emotional moment of their day, their vows. It’s all there in their Wedding Story, of course, but I wanted to say something different about their day. I wanted to show you a story – which happens up and down the country every weekend – which is built upon the father of the bride, Noel, giving away the most precious thing in his life… his little girl.

Noel is a very successful business man and a natural born storyteller. He started his speech with the usual thank yous and before we knew it he had taken an entire banquet hall back to a time when the summers seemed to last forever. He spoke about his love for his wife, his children and the bonds they forged as a family enjoying their annual holidays at a caravan park, swimming in the sea, picking mussels, and walks on the beach. Memories, great memories. He gave us an insight into Lisa and it was the same girl I got to see earlier that morning.

By the time he was finished there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and we were all dreaming about the past…. and then Noel snapped us back from 1980 with a quick joke and we were all having the craic again.

So, this Wedding Story teaser is for all the Dads out there. And Lisa and Pierce; it was an absolute pleasure to be part of your wedding. Thank you so much for having us! Elaine and I loved every second of your day and we know that your Wedding Story is going to be another important addition to your family memories.

Other key vendors and suppliers

Magda LukasWhat can I say. It was our first time meeting in person and she was an absolute joy to work alongside. In fact, she was trying so hard to remain invisible that I was afraid her photographs might suffer. How wrong could I be. Lisa’s album is beautiful, really stunning! Magda is a lovely person and a wonderful wedding photographer.

Father Michael Hussey – Did I say already that I was spoiled for choice on this wedding day.  Fr. Michael’s homilies are always poetic and meaningful and he spoke about All Rivers Run To The Sea and A Tree Called Life.  Brilliant.  And he is a gentleman.  He always welcomes us into the church and he even highlighted the importance of what we do in preserving memories.  Thanks, Fr. Michael.

Beauty SpecialistAileen Goodman is a familiar and friendly face we meet on our travels.  Her work speaks for itself but I can also tell you that her friendly nature and presence can add so much to your morning preparations. Five star treatment.

Hair StylistHighly recommended!  Cathriona Rohan is a lady.  Again, a friendly presence and everyone was impressed with Lisa and her bridesmaids hair.

Marina Cassidy – Gifted.  Marina’s talents on the harp and her amazing vocals lifts any ceremony to a whole new level.

The Sweetest Thing

If we do not meet the bride or groom on the morning of a wedding, I firmly believe that it’s possible to judge what to expect from the day by weighing up the first gathering of guests at the ceremony. Rob and Caroline’s guests were a group of New Yorkers and they arrived to the ceremony venue with lots of energy, friendliness, and fun. I went inside the church and told Elaine “It’s going to be a great day!”.

I was right.

Caroline’s parents are native Irish so Doonbeg, Co. Clare was quite literally home to them but for many, if not all of Rob’s family, it was their first time on Irish soil. Rob is from Italian descent and he also happens to be a filmmaker with one of New York’s leading wedding studios. It was a huge honor for us that he chose Velvetine Studios to tell their Wedding Story. It was also a pleasure for us to be part of it all; we are lucky enough to film for many American couples and their destination weddings but there’s something extra special about New Yorkers and Rob and Caroline’s guests made us feel like family, they really were that friendly!

Michelle McDermott from Dream Irish Wedding was the wedding planner and I have to say she is just brilliant.  When couples used to ask me for advice about their coming weddings I used to say you need to do X, Y, and Z.  That was before my own wedding day last year.  Nowadays I ask them have they considered a planner because a great one – like Michelle – is worth every last cent.  Not only has Michelle great working relationships with quality suppliers and service providers but her keen eye for fine details means that the couple want for nothing and just as importantly, worry about nothing.  Michelle is always on hand behind the scenes – an invisible presence – making sure that everything runs to plan so that the couple can enjoy their day to the fullest.

Saying farewell at the end of the night to Rob, Caroline, and the bridesmaids, Lorraine and Colleen was like saying goodbye to old friends.  We were made to feel welcome from the very second we met and they could not do enough for us; we were even seated on the table plan with some of their closest friends.  Caroline and Rob: Thank you so, so much for having us as part of your dream Irish wedding!

Other key vendors and suppliers:

Doonbeg LodgeThis is a beautiful location and they have some amazing plans to improve their wedding venue.  The biggest compliment I can pay them is that the meal was the tastiest I have ever sat down to at a wedding. Superb!

The WoodardsIt’s always a pleasure to work with Keith and Evelyn and they produced some gorgeous pictures.

You Are My Destiny

Sarah and Mike warned me that they were a fun couple… and that’s exactly what they are.

The Blondin family from Boston found us on the internet at a very early stage of their planning and after a few emails and a couple of phone calls we locked down their date for them.  I had been looking forward to this wedding on several counts; it was a relatively small, intimate affair, amazing vendors and suppliers began to attach themselves to the event, it was taking place in Killarney, and on the eve of my own wedding day, Sarah’s mother Joanne sent me best wishes via an email.  That was a really nice touch and I just knew I was going to be meeting some wonderful people the following May.

The ceremony took place at St. Mary’s Cathedral on a typical Irish spring/summer’s day – we had glorious sun, wind and rain all competing with each other for a piece of the action.  Father MacNamara officiated the ceremony which was made all the more special by some wonderful music from Dolce.  Standing at the back of the spectacular cathedral and in its shadows was the wedding planner, Annie Byrne from Aislinn Events.  Annie was a joy to work alongside and she came in for high praise from all directions and Fr. MacNamara said some lovely words at the end of the ceremony about all her efforts for the couple and their guests.  And she so deserved the kind words: she has a keen eye for detail, her calming influence – despite the pressure of running a wedding day as well as she did – had a positive affect on everyone around her, and all credit to her, the day ran like clockwork.  Well done, Annie; Elaine and I wish we knew about you before our own wedding day because we would have booked you in a heartbeat.

The reception took place at Muckross Park Hotel and as soon as the formalities were all taken care of and out of the way, these Americans – young and old – got on that dance floor and let loose with The Marvels.  You have probably heard me raving about these guys before, after all, they are arguably the best wedding band in the country and they lifted the place!!

Elaine and I enjoyed this wedding so much – the fab couple, their friendly families and guests, the superb line up of vendors and suppliers, and the American style craic – that we stayed on for an extra hour and soaked up the atmosphere.  Mike, Sarah, the Blondins, and The Clancys – thank you so much for having us as part of your wedding day.

Other key vendors and service providers:

The WoodardsWe always enjoy working with Keith and Evelyn and we had a good old natter at dinner. Love their wedding photography from this wedding!

DolceJust want to mention Dolce once again.  I always tell couples that when it comes to choosing vendors and suppliers for your wedding day then be sure to pick the best quality your budget allows and, just as important, make sure they are nice people.  And you cannot meet nicer people than Trish and John from Dolce!!

Muckross Park HotelWonderful location in Killarney and the food was gorgeous.

I’m going to start by saying that I loved this couple, Hughie and Erica – how could you not – and I will always have fond memories of their wedding day in Killarney.

So much thought, effort, and care was invested into this wedding day and the hands on approach of the families added a wonderful sense of intimacy to the event.  I watched them preparing the church – which is situated in the heart of the Black Valley, an amazing location! – with flowers and candles, Erica’s brother Richie mesmerised the congregation with his singing, the readings were treated with respect, and Hughie’s god daughter Cailie almost stole the show with her surprise poem at the end of the ceremony.

Hughie and Erica – and their families – are loveable rogues, that is for certain.  So they could pick no better priest to marry them than Fr. Donal O’Connor.  I think he invented the word rogue and it is always a pleasure for us to film in any of his churches.  He makes each wedding so personal to all his couples and I just loved the little touches he added to Hughie and Erica’s ceremony.

The trip from the Black Valley to the reception venue, Dunloe Castle, was an eventful one because so many of the Dublin guests had difficulty with the twisted, bumpy, and narrow mountain roads; apparently, many D reg cars ended up with scratches and one lost an entire front bumper.  But, like everyone admitted, it was worth every single hair raising second for the inspiring views of the Gap of Dunloe.

Jason Clifford and his team at Dunloe Castle hosted another perfect event and they came in for high praise during the speeches; I even have a shot of Jason blushing in the backgrounds while he received the well deserved praise.  And Hughie was kind enough to mention myself and Elaine for our invisible presence {he couldn’t even find us in the small church!} and his words were the kindest we have ever been lucky enough to receive. Thank you so much, Hughie and Erica, and we appreciate all your generosity on the day… and by the way, the meal you kindly laid on for us was to die for!!

I cried all the way through the speeches… cried with laughter that is!  No-one at this wedding took themselves too seriously and they all enjoyed the good natured banter.  I can only remember one other wedding of ours that came close to the laughs we had during these speeches.

So, thanks to the loveable rogues for having us as part of your day!!!!

Tulfarris Wedding Story

April.  A fantastic month of weddings for us and first up was Eimear and Niall in Wicklow.

We pulled into Blessington the morning of and assumed that such a small town could only have one Catholic Church.  So, we parked the car and unloaded the gear but something about the church didn’t quite feel right.  Elaine made it her business to find the local priest and he informed us that Blessington had three churches… and the wedding was not taking place in this one.  Luckily enough we had allowed loads of time so we drove five minutes up the road and found our ceremony venue.

Eimear and Niall are living in Sydney so it was great to see them at home enjoying their day with family and friends.  It was very obvious how much all these people meant to them and the day was an emotional rollercoaster for all involved.

The reception took place at the impressive Tulfarris Hotel and I must say, the staff and service were second to none.  Elaine and I stayed as guests at the hotel for two nights and marked it into our calendar for a revisit whenever we get the chance to take a weekend off to recharge our batteries.  Another added bonus was that we got to meet Martin Hill and his assistant Chris again.  They are wedding photographers based in the UK but it’s always a pleasure for us to work with them. Two great guys who produce amazing, dramatic images and their fun attitude really kept the wedding party buzzing during the photoshoot.

Thanks a million to Eimear and Niall for having us part of your day!

The Voyage – Wedding Story Teaser

Watch it on Facebook

It’s probably fair to say that we had the same amount of trouble in trying to find Mullaghbane the second time around as we did the first.  It’s a small, quiet village, twenty minutes or so away from Newry, population four hundred, and we first visited it for Aidan and Aoife’s wedding a couple of years ago.  When her sister Ciana asked us if we would travel to film her Wedding Story we were hugely honoured that she chose us and we jumped at the chance to meet everybody once again.

Ciana’s parents, Rita and Gerry, own the most gorgeous house with a beautiful garden that overlooks Mullaghbane and beyond.  It really is a spectacular location and we captured some amazing footage there for Aoife’s wedding.  However, on this occasion, we made a conscious decision not to film any exterior shots of the house while Ciana was getting her hair and make-up.  Yes, I was tempted to place the wedding shoes beside a garden ornament and hang the wedding dress from a leafless tree but I resisted; Ciana’s wedding was a whole new story.

We met Liam at the church and he immediately struck me as the type who would prefer any attention to be focused anywhere but on him.  But, of course, that’s not going to happen on your wedding day or least not until the bride arrives, so even though Liam can be seen in the short film showing off his steady hand as a sign of no nerves, trust me, he was nervous!

Ciana and her wedding party arrived to the church in style with Gerard McGirr Wedding Cars.  The cars were spotless and impressive and the drivers were so professional; it’s no wonder that Ciana still heaps high praise on them today!  Another supplier who deserves a mention is the wedding designer, Martina Crilly.  She was not only helpful in filling us in on all the small details to watch out for but it also has to be said that the floral designs in the church were a credit to her!

Mullaghbane and its people have rich Celtic traditions and the music from Rulya at the ceremony lifted the hairs on the back of my neck.  Blaithín sang the most beautiful Gaelic version of Blackbird that I have ever heard and her brother Garrett, a gifted vocalist, sang a note perfect rendition of The Call and The Answer. Powerful stuff and it really did complement the ceremony.  It also helped to guide me in what direction to take with Ciana and Liam’s teaser: I wanted to show the stillness of Mullaghbane, a simple village where time seems to stand still, and I wanted to capture the strong sense of community that exists there.  Most of all, I wanted show Ciana and Liam, their family and friends for who they really are; great people!

Thank you so much for having us!

Wedding Story at The Malton

Watch it on Facebook

I wasn’t happy about the compulsory marriage guidance course I had to attend once a week for four weeks… and the icing on the cake was that it was on Champions League night.  “Oh stop moaning” Elaine scolded me in the car before we went in for our first session with Accord {I think it was Accord}. “We both have to do this and it will be easier on everyone else in there if we can do it without you sulking.  And besides, think of it as a chance of getting out and meeting new people.”

Wonderful…

Was the marriage guidance course a painful experience? Well, for me, a hardened cynic who didn’t even want to get married in a church, the truthful answer is yes.  I took nothing away from it, I missed my football, and worst of it all it cost me money!  However, Elaine was right; we did meet some great couples which did ease the pain… in fact, after the first couple of weeks I was actually able to tune out from the nonsense I was being forced to listen to and simply have a laugh with the people around us.  The couple sitting next us were a quiet pair; she was a lady through and through and he was a gentleman… but when the guys would start to act like bold schoolboys he was the first to share his infectious laugh.  Turns out that this couple were getting married in the same hotel as myself and Elaine… a nice little coincidence.

Weeks later we filmed Una and DJ’s wedding in Tralee and who did we bump into?  That’s right, Rosemarie and Berth; the couple we sat next to at the marriage course and we discovered that we were already booked to film their wedding.  Roll on several months later and I spotted something during the edit process of Una and DJ’s wedding; watch the teaser and at the 3.05min mark, when Una is walking down the aisle, you will notice Rosemarie and Berth to her right.  Una continues walking and she passes another couple, Amy and Philip, and you will notice Amy rub Una’s shoulder as the bride passes by.

It was a beautiful and rare moment in that I noticed the three most prominent people in the shot were past, present and future brides.

As 2010 drew to a close it was finally Rosemarie and Berth’s big day and we could not have been more excited for them.  Their wedding was a beautiful event and will forever be wrapped in many fond memories in my mind – like Berth’s reactions as he waited for Rosemarie to walk down the aisle to him – but mostly, I will remember sitting with Elaine during the meal and confirming amongst ourselves that what we do is so much more than just wedding video.  It has never been about wedding video.

In our own small way, Velvetine Studios are making friends with wonderful people who stories inspire us and we in turn capture their most precious memories.  Una has already given birth to a baby girl, Amy has a little one on the way, and if Rosemarie and Berth are lucky enough to have children some day then who knows, maybe all the children can sit and not only watch their parents wedding stories together but maybe then can watch and find some meaning in the shot of the past, present, and future bride.

It doesn’t get any better than that and that’s why I go the extra mile to infuse each story with all the care and attention they deserve.

Rosemarie and Berth – two amazing people who deserve a lifetime of happiness – thank you so much for having us!

Sweet November Wedding Teaser

Watch it on Facebook

I suppose you could say that today marks the start of a new journey in Velvetine Studios evolution of wedding video. Why? Because this was the first of many weddings that we filmed after our own big day so it’s going to be interesting to see how we approach all your stories after standing in your shoes.

Jane and Brian weren’t even looking for wedding video when we bumped into them at the Dromoland Castle Wedding Extravaganza in County Clare.  Elaine was looking after our stand – I was very busy in the car listening to Kerry beating Cork in the All Ireland final on the radio – when she noticed Brian and his wife-to-be sampling the tables at Dromoland.  She and Brian went to college together so it was a happy to coincidence to meet him and Jane at the wedding fair.

After a lot of catching up, Elaine explained the difference between our story films and wedding video and we were delighted when they booked us!

I was looking forward to filming this wedding because they were a great and a happy-go-lucky couple.  Like all our couples, I only hoped that nerves wouldn’t smother any of their enjoyment.  Any fears I might have had for Brian and Jane were totally uncalled for – this pair of fun loving people enjoyed every second of their day and I’ve been smiling at their antics for the past week in the edit suite.

The wedding car broke down on route to the church which meant an anxious 45 minute wait for the groom – a feeling I know only too well.  Apparently, Jane – affectionately know as “Bird” – lept out of the wedding car, flagged down a jeep, got towed to the venue, and she was still laughing when she arrived. Brilliant!  The next problem was on my end; it was freezing outside and I had been standing in the cold for almost an hour… with my camera.  As soon as I stepped into the church to film Jane walking up the aisle my camera lens fogged up with condensation.  I managed to work it out – that’s the beauty of filming with multiple cameras – and aside from all that, the ceremony was perfect… and Fr. Ciaran McCarthy’s homily was one of the most peotic, well thought out pieces I’ve ever heard from the pulpit.

I must also mention Brendan Landy at this point.  Brendan is not only celebrated here in Ireland for his jaw dropping wedding photography but he has also attracted international acclaim for his work.  What a lot of people do not realise is how brilliant he and his uber talented assistant, Catherine, are to work alongside.  Brendan deserves not one but two blog posts all to himself… so stayed tuned for that in the very near future.

The reception was held at Dromoland Castle – we LOVE this venue – and it looked like a winter wonderland.  I’m sure that very little can surprise the wonderful staff at Dromoland but I’ll bet it is not often that they get to see a break dancing groom like Brian!  Was I surprised?  Yes, a little… But I shouldn’t have been.  Brian and Jane were anything but ordinary and we loved them for it.

Thanks for having us!

Bridge House Wedding Story

Watch it on Facebook

Jenny and Gavin’s wedding came at a time when I was beginning to feel like I was carrying a pressure cooker around on top of my shoulders.  Velvetine Studios had just navigated our way through a blockbuster summer of weddings and in one weeks time I was getting married myself.

We stayed at The Killeshin Hotel, which was gorgeous, and when I woke the next morning I was feeling refreshed and excited to get going.  We also met Trish and Sean, a past couple of ours in the lobby.  Sean was giving a motivational speech to some corporate body and Trish and Elaine ended up swapping wedding tales.  Once they had finished winding each other up to dangerous levels of excitement it was time to hit the road and film a very special wedding.

We arrived at the church and Elaine and I were a long way from home but I have to say, we got the warmest of welcomes from the wedding guests. Not only had Jenny filled most of them in on our Wedding Stories but they were also congratulating us on our own big day next week.

We had a brief chat with Father O’Byrne before the ceremony and he suggested that we not record his homily.  I thought he was only joking but he was very serious.  So now I was faced with a mini dilemma.  I knew my clients would want the homily recorded but I also wanted to respect the celebrants wishes. I made a decision not to record the homily.

Jenny arrived to the church and she looked radiant.  Her documentary wedding photographer – David McElland – allowed her to exit the car and make her way to the church without any interruption or staged poses.  I love documentary photographers because they allow a day to take its natural course.  An added bonus was that David was a joy to work alongside and we had mighty craic during our dinner at the reception.  Back to the ceremony, it was obvious that Jenny had put a lot of thought into this and all other portions of the day.  Her flower and candle arrangements were stunning, she chose meaningful readings, handpicked great readers, and there was an obvious connection between the couple and their priest…

Father O’Byrne started his homily.

My hand reached for the stop button and Fr. O’Byrne started to weave a story about a cornflake box around a theme of ‘coincidence’.  I was hooked. The more I convinced myself that I needed to push Stop the more I found my hand drifting away from the camera and down to my side.  The priest’s words brought me back to the coincidental meeting with Trish and Sean at the hotel that morning.  I found myself looking back at a crammed summer of weddings and wondered how different my life would be if I hadn’t been ‘lucky’ enough to have met so many great brides and grooms.  I wondered where I would be if I hadn’t found myself staring at a €2,500 camera in a London shop window back in 2003.  I was pretty broke but I bought it on a credit card in a moment of madness… That moment of madness took me on a journey into a new career and back to Ireland where I met Elaine.  In just one weeks time, we would be married.

I’m glad I recorded that homily.  It carried great meaning to the couple, it gripped an entire congregation, and it made me reflect upon my own good fortune and somewhat prepared me for the week ahead.

We could not have handpicked a better couple than Jenny and Gavin to film before our own big day.  Coincidence? Probably… but I’m so thankful that we got to share in their amazing day just the same!

Dunmore House Wedding Story

Watch it on Facebook

I suppose you could say I’m a people watcher.

Even back in the day, when I could not afford to own a video camera, I used to find myself sitting in cafés observing how people interact with other.  For instance, what did that hug between two friends really mean: was it a comfortable embrace or simply a polite but strained exchange?  In answering my own questions I would find myself building stories inspired by the strangers around me.  I’ll come back to this but first, let me tell you a little about Caroline and Brian’s wedding day.

The wedding ceremony took place in the same Cloheen Church where 32 years ago, Caroline’s parents, Frank and Eileen, were married and Father John celebrated both ceremonies; a beautiful touch!.  As soon as this fact came to my attention I began to see this teaser in Black and White.  Their full Wedding Story is awash with vibrant colours but B&W always summons up a nostalgic aesthetic for me so where better to use it than in their teaser.

Caroline and Brian are a fun couple and the only time they ever got choked up was when they spoke about both sets of parents.  Their appreciation and love for their parents was there for all to see on the day so, of course, there is a strong theme of family connections driving the teaser and Wedding Story.

The wedding reception was held at Dunmore House Hotel, County Cork where the views are just breathtaking.  Caroline and Brian could not praise the hotel enough so it turned out to be the perfect venue for them.  Another fantastic service provider who always deserves a special mention is documentary wedding photographer, Roger Overall.  We love working with him because he allows a wedding day to unfold with zero interference and he respects all aspects of the wedding experience.  Weddings are all about the bride and groom: some vendors only pay lip service to this fact but not Roger; his actions speak louder than words! Most of all, we love working with Roger because he has become a very good friend and, like myself, he thrives on reading people and the moments they create.

And that brings me back to people watching.  What I noticed on Caroline and Brian’s day and what made me smile while I edited their film were the people in the background, especially Caroline’s friends.  They are beaming.  Huge smiles light up their faces.  You can see them craning their necks for better views during the ceremony.  It’s a sure sign that Caroline and Brian are loved by their friends.  And these reactions say more than words can ever say about this couple!

Thanks for having us Caroline and Brian; it was a pleasure for us to share in your wonderful story!

Darre and Matt – Wedding Story Teaser

Watch it on Facebook

This couple will always have a special place in our heart!

The Boland family live on the Galway and Mayo border and from the second we were welcomed into their home on the morning of the wedding, Elaine and I bonded with this family in a very special way.  There was a huge well of good feeling toward the bride and it was heart warming to see all the bridesmaids rally behind Darre as the nerves cranked up by the second.  Not only that, but everyone couldn’t do enough for myself and Elaine and our time with the Boland {and O’Malley} family was one of our most memorable 2010 moments.

A huge amount of care and attention went into every aspect of the day and the ceremony was no different. The church decor by Wedding Couture was elegant and stylish and Darre’s entrance was one of my all time favourites; after all her efforts, after all the build up of nerves, her moment was here and one couldn’t help but be touched by her reaction.

The homily by Father Michael Crosby was just amazing. The inflection in his voice was dreamy and somewhat nostalgic and his message was simple and yet, meaningful.

After the ceremony we travelled with the wedding photographer, Melissa Mannion to the picturesque village of Cong where The Quiet Man starring John Wayne was filmed.  Melissa’s reputation proceeds her so although I had never worked with her before I had heard many good reports; as it turns out, all well deserved. She was a pleasure to work alongside and I look forward to seeing her again in the future.

Our trip back to the hotel, in unfamiliar territory and without our Sat-Nav, was fraught with nerves in case we got lost. Despite a couple of wrong turns {I will at least try to listen to Elaine in future} we managed to get to the Claregalway Hotel before our bride and groom. Relief!

Darre made sure we were fed and watered with a gorgeous meal at the bar and again, we are so thankful to the kindness extended to us by these incredible people!

Darre and Matthias; thank you so much for choosing us to be a part of your day and congratulations on your little bundle of joy that’s on the way!!!

Maryanne and Phil

Watch it on Facebook

I know I’ve said this before but there is something truly magical about Dromoland Castle weddings and I know the Australian – and Irish – guests were very impressed with Maryanne and Phil’s big day.

Maryanne is an Irish girl living in Australia where she met her new husband, Phil.  They have an adorable boy, Ethan, and although he was quite ill on the eve of the wedding, the little fella pulled through on the big day and he played a stormer.

Elaine and I travelled up to Clare the night before and we stayed in our favourite guesthouse, The Courtyard, because we had an early rise next morning to film the bride and groom preparations at the castle.  The girls were very well behaved but the boys’ camp was full of mischief and I struggled to keep the camera steady as I laughed at three grown men trying to dress little Ethan.  Off the top of my head I can’t tell you for certain if they ever managed to get his shoes on….

The ceremony was held at St. John’s, Cratloe and we love working with the parish priest, Fr. Liam Enright.  He is an absolute gentleman and his common touch always puts to bed any nerves that a couple might have during the ceremony.

Margaret Daly and Nico Hernandez from Dromoland Castle made sure that the everyone – including myself and Elaine – had an incredible time at the reception.

Thanks for having us, Maryanne, Phil, and Ethan!!!

Canadian Wedding Story

Watch it on Facebook

In some ways, this wedding event was a fond trip down memory lane for me. Since I first decided to try and redefine wedding video into something more film like… and cool… I always had an idea of where I needed to go and one of the early steps in my evolution was taken in Connemara when I filmed a wedding for a couple of American families at Rossleague Manor about four years ago.

So when a Canadian couple, Susan and Shane, enquired to see if I would travel from Tralee and into the heart of Connemara to film their day at that same country house I jumped at the chance.

The wedding party was made up of close family, friends, and the priest. Eighteen people in total, if I remember correctly. And I’ve got to admit, I love filming these type of days where the guest list is small. I can learn so much more about the couple through watching and listening to the people around me… and it is so easy to capture a sense of the tight bonds these small groups hold for each other.

I’m not sure what Susan and Shane expected from their Irish wedding but it couldn’t get any more romantic than what they got; a quaint church in the middle of the countryside, a charming Irish priest, candlelit ceremony, pints of Guinness, and old manor house, and of course, rain. It was a fantastic day and I know it’s one they will never forget!

Susan, Shane, and your family and friends: Sláinte!

Clodagh and Edmond

Watch it on Facebook

The groomsmen were trying hard to convince me that Edmond was nervous underneath his happy, charming exterior.  They failed.  Edmond was by far the coolest man in the church; in fact, I think my usual pre-bridal arrival nerves far outweighed any jitters the groom was experiencing.

Speaking of bridal arrivals, this one happened at about 100km an hour in a Maserati.  I was setting myself up for a creative shot of the approach and I nearly had to dive out of the way of incoming vehicle.  And, someone somewhere was definitely in a hurry to get Clodagh, the stunning bride, up that aisle to Edmond because her parents were just short of running her to the top of the church.  Clodagh joked about it in her speeches and promised her parents that “only the finest of nursing homes await you…”

Dunloe Castle and general manager, Jason Clifford, deserve a big shout out for the part they played in this amazing event.  Exquisite food and first class service for the guests and as ever, Elaine and I were made to feel right home.

Thanks a million to Clodagh and Edmond for having us!

The Sheltering Tree

Watch it on Facebook

When John and Maria {who are living in Sydney} re-introduced themselves to me at Karen & Barry’s wedding in Clare – the week before their own big day – I couldn’t place them at first.  I had met the couple about a year beforehand for a nice cup of tea and even though they had left a huge impression upon me at the time, right now I couldn’t for the life of me remember who they were.

It was September, I was working on a wedding for Ireland’s biggest and best known wedding planner, we were in the middle of my busiest summer of shooting ever, our enquiry rates had gone through the roof, and my own wedding was less than one month away.  I got up at 6 every morning and spent 12 hour days editing weddings, when I finished work our families discussed nothing else but my wedding, and when I’d take a drive to get a break from it all I would find huge billboard campaigns on the roadside advertising wedding fairs and the like… There was no escaping My Big Fat Wedding Life.

One week later, we made the short trip back west to Castlegregory and Dingle and we found ourselves on very familiar territory.  Keith and Evelyn Woodard – who we love working alongside but never get enough time to continue our great chats with – were looking after the wedding photography.  Christina from All Seasons {who was our amazing florist for our own wedding} was looking after the floral arrangements, Marina Cassidy {who was one of the stars of my wedding!} was the musician, and Father Michael Hussey was the celebrant and he is well known to myself and Elaine.

The ceremony was amazing.

I may have been going through an overload of all things weddings but this day’s events had an almost hypnotic affect on me… In fact, Elaine commented afterward on our way to the Dingle Skellig Hotel that I looked lost in the music as I gazed into Marina’s harp while she played.  The woman is an amazing artist and she has a gift that very few possess; what she does is very special.

Then Father Hussey delivered one of the most poetic homilies I’ve ever heard about friendships and home.  It was beautiful and very meaningful to the couple, their families, and friends.

As the day unfolded, Fr. Hussey’s words stayed with me and the theme of “home” grew stronger and stronger as I looked and listened closer to John and Maria’s story.  I also learned that they are the nicest people you could wish to meet and although it took me a few moments to place them just one week before, I can honestly say that after sharing in their amazing day I will never forget them!

Thanks for having us, John and Maria!!!
